A consortium comprised of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, California University of Pennsylvania, the Community College of Allegheny County, and Point Park University was formed to recruit African American males into their teacher education programs. We are funded by the Heinz Endowment, and our goal is to increase the number of African American males in our teacher certification programs from the current 1% to 5% by the year 2015. Over the next several years, we intend to contact middle school and high school students to get them thinking about a career in teaching. In addition, we will contact guidance counselors, teachers, principals, and superintendents regarding the need for more black teachers.
